Indulgent bliss

Needing a bit of a ‘pick me up’ after the slow start to summer Alex Jenkins heads to the newly opened The Sp@ The Grand in Brighton.

JPEt The Grand Spa in The Grand Hotel BrightonThe Grand Hotel has always been synonymous with luxury and sophistication. But now the Brighton establishment has taken this to a new level.

Head through the impressive hotel lobby, past the newly opened seafood restaurant, which overlooks the beach, and you will see some stairs leading down to the spa.
And that is where your indulgent journey begins.

The Sp@ The Grand only opened recently and is an oasis of calm and serenity. Decked out in cool blues, beige, silver and gold with carpet you sink into with each step and dressed with elegant furniture you know you are in for a treat.

The polite and courteous staff instantly put you at ease as you are guided to the changing rooms to slip into your thick robe and slippers.

I had booked in for a Carita sculpting gold perfection facial and I had high expectations. Carita is a world renowned brand that has a long history of delivering exceptional results and uses luxury ingredients such as mother of pearl, gold, and diamond.

The gold facial I was having was billed as an ‘unforgettable experience’, promising to rejuvenate the skin and make it look visibly toned.

Now, it is easy to make such claims in brochures but as the saying goes the proof is in the pudding, or in this case the testing.

Led into ‘the cove’, my room for the treatment, I could already feel myself relaxing, with the gentle music in the background and the dim lights helping to transport me into a blissful state.

And as I snuggled in-between the warm sheets and duvet on the massage bed I knew it would be hard to stay alert.

JPEt The Grand Spa in The Grand Hotel BrightonAs my thoughts drifted, my beauty therapist, Jessica, gently explained how she was going to balance my chakras before cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising my face and neck.

With a head massage thrown in as well I admit to falling completely under the spell Jessica was weaving as she stimulated my skin.

After a while, I am unsure how long I lay there, Jessica explained she was going to start using the idéal Pro-Lift device, which sent tiny electric currents through my skin to lift my facial muscles.

The amount of current used is changeable, starting low and working your way up to an intensity you feel comfortable with.

Most of the time it was very relaxing, with only certain patches of my face, where my skin was obviously weaker, more sensitive. However it was not painful.

After Jessica had completed one side I was handed a mirror so I could see the effects and I was taken completely by surprise. I could actually see a noticeable difference, with the side ‘worked on’ plumper, smoother and less lined.

And by the time my entire face was finished I was glowing and my skin was radiant.

Never normally one for facials, I was blown away by the results and I am now a convert. The treatment is the perfect indulgence to have before a special event or if you are keen to make sure you look your best. And the more you have the better the effect.

From August, the hotel will be the first spa outside London to have the new Carita Pro Lift Machine, which uses gloves instead of sponges – promising to make the treatment even more special.

The facial I had was just one of a number on offer, with the ‘diamond of beauty facial’ another great alternative if your skin is starting to show the signs of ageing.

JPEt The Grand Spa in The Grand Hotel BrightonWith a whole host of massages and other treatments on offer you could spend a weekend testing the various treats available. And with a steam room and sauna free to use by customers and a relaxation lounge this is the perfect ‘chill out’ retreat.

You would never know you are in a city as you are tucked underground in this haven – this is pure indulgent bliss.

The Sp@ The Grand has proven it is certainly living up to its name. The sculpting gold perfection facial takes one hour 45 minutes and costs £149.

To save 20 per cent off the price of the facial during August 2013 please quote ‘ETC Magazine’ when booking your Carita facial. This offer is based on availability. There are no restrictions to the day of the week you can receive the facial but it cannot be used in conjunction with any other offers or discounts, including spa membership.
