Garden House Design

A Ferring company reveals to Charlotte Pearson its mission to get people to live outside more.

Carrying out DIY jobs in your house is part and parcel of being a home owner. Many people will spend thousands of pounds and countless hours making sure that the kitchen, living room or bathroom is just how they want it.

However, when it comes to the garden, it is often neglected and nearly always at the bottom of a very long list.
“It is surprising as people tend to forget about their garden and will spend £20-30,000 on the inside but won’t dedicate time and money to the outside,” Debs Winrow, from Garden House Designs, explains.
“This is changing as people are starting to understand how important a garden is, and are beginning to invest in it, especially as a lot of homes open out on to the outside space.”

Based in Ferring, the award-winning company has more than 20 years experience and was set up by brothers Mark and Rod Winrow, who are equal directors of the company.
“Mark and Rod have always been very outdoorsy, being outdoors is very important to them,” Debs, marketing manager and Rod’s wife, explains. “Our mantra is to help others to live outdoors more often.”

Garden House Design specialises in creating gardens of all shapes and sizes, from urban courtyards, to balconies and rural spaces.
“We have recently launched a styling service,” Debs reveals. “If someone has already had their garden done but it needs to be styled, for example with particular accessories or pot plants, we can go in and consult them and provide that service.”

GardenHouseDesign9Covering gardens throughout south east England, primarily Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, London and Kent, it can undertake the whole garden project or just parts of it.
“We work with Hydro Pool a lot. We recently created a garden for a lady who had a swim spa. We used a Renson, the roof can open or close and it has walls which come down, it really is popular and we have installed them for a number of people.
“It creates a room outside, which you can also open up, if you need or want to, if the weather is ok,” she says.

The company ensures that, be it a patio or pergola, styling or putting in plants, the client is at the forefront of their minds.
“We work to the client’s needs and expectations. If we think something won’t work we will say and work to provide solutions,” Debs reveals. “We love exceeding people’s expectations rather than just meeting them.”

And the importance of uniting the outside and inside is evident when they talk about their projects.
“As many kitchens and dining rooms now open out on the garden we think about how the garden looks from inside the house so work with line of sight, how does it look when you are in the kitchen.
“We don’t just design the garden for the three months you are going to use it in the supposed summer, we design it for the 12 months of the year,” she says.

GardenHouseDesign7But it begs the question is their passion for outdoor space reflected in their own garden?
“Mine and Rod’s has different areas. One with a sofa where we can chill out and enjoy the morning sun with breakfast and then the bottom area has a dining table.
“It is about creating indoor space outside and a space that meets our needs by having different areas for different purposes,” she reveals.

With so many years experience Debs explains it is hard to say which has been their favourite project.
“The most exciting is the one we are working on,” she smiles.

A member of the Association of Professional Landscapers for the past five years the Garden House Design team not only undertake private jobs.

DThurgar.JWinrow.PWinrow.MWinrow.RWinrow“We also do commercial jobs, and work for schools,” Debs explains. “We are currently working with Chestnut Tree House on a garden for them, they have a lot of woodland so we are creating a walkway so they can enjoy the space.”
